Where Should A DJ Get Their Music?
In this video Tom breaks down both options.
Streaming allows you to access music via platforms like Tidal, SoundCloud, Dropbox, or Beatport. Its convenient and it offers you the entire world's collection of music right there at your fingertips however it does rely on a stable Wi-Fi connection and a monthly subscription. So if your WiFi connection drops out, so does your music…!
And while some of the premium options allow you to access your playlists offline, this option is limited and often requires a more costly monthly subscription fee.
While streaming music through TIDAL has its benefits, we recommend purchasing and owning your tracks from platforms like Beatport or iTunes
On the other hand you can own your music by purchasing it from platforms like iTunes, Beatport, or TRAXSOURCE. After purchasing a track you can download the file at anytime (forever), add it to any device and access it through rekordbox .. (again, forever!)
Owning your music means you need to find, download and even export your tracks but it's a fail-safe option given you don't have to rely on a stable internet connection.
Personally, I prefer owning my music for that reason and because I have more control of playlists and track management … however I see plenty of value in using a streaming service to not only find tracks I like and want to own, but also to use daily for enjoying and listening to music through.
Whether you choose to stream or own however, having a well-organised music library is key to your preparedness to perform. Like any job, if we know where to find what we need for a particular task, doing our job is much easier and less stressful. Explore both options and find what works best for you!
